The chilly night air seemed just a little brisker tonight than usual. At least, this side of town seemed to have that kind of feel about it. There always seems to be something special going on this late at night, but it wasn't until the lights hit the sky that anyone could even notice. Spotlights breaking against the clouds high overhead, at least four of them, that almost immediately cast a dim aura out over the city's limits and beyond. Leaning forward from his relaxed little perch atop the near-leafless tree, Jack's eyes met the sky with bewilderment for a few moments before he realized what it'd meant.
Something huge was going down, there had to be with that much attention being squared in one place. Looking down as he sighed in the slightest, he tugged the rim of his scarf up a little past his lower lip then shivering just a little with the cool breeze whistling past him. How long had he spaced out anyway? The nights were getting so much longer now that fall had come and winter was soon on it's way, but that made it almost impossible to tell what time it was anymore. Oh well, it wasn't a huge issue when time was all he ever had on his side.
Though curiosity kept pokng at his sides, he looked up again to see the lights dancing across the sky back and forth before he made up his mind to investigate. Chances are there was something worth checking out at the source, but he couldn't be too sure just yet. Maybe only a couple dozen blocks or so away, the young man wandered through the crowded streets lit up with bars and various shops still open. It couldn't be too late just yet, but in a city that hardly sleeps it's difficult to tell when exactly is 'too late' for most people.
The crowds seemed pleased with their shopping and partying, but as he moved closer to the base of those bright spotlights he saw less and less people passing by until he could hear music just on the horizon. Excitedly he took off into a sprint up the sidewalk, until at last he could see what exactly the fuss was about. Some kind of celebration was being held, with one the greater manors of Lakeport lit up like a christmas tree. The tall fences kept in the most extravagant of all gatherings from the public's reach, but he could tell this had to be some rich stiff's doing.
Maybe a birthday or something, who knows, but the legions of people inside that huge manor were obvious even from the outside. Every window in the place was lit with a warm gold hue, the lights outside just as bright as it the power of the sun could have fueled such an event. It had Jack's interest running wild, but at the same time he felt a pinch on his nerves that made him scowl a little. He resented the rich for all they had, even just a little, but for reasons that made him dislike them for what his family went through.
Breaking his concentration from the party going on far beyond his reach, his stomach let out a rather unsettling gurgle of disapproval, and it wasn't until he heard it that he realized just how hungry he was after all. As he raised a hand to the barred fence outlining the vast reaches of the property, he set himself intentions to find a way in to the party. Most of his intentions weren't too malicious, but hunger drove him to stare on as he waited for his mind to come up with the perfect plan to sneak past the security systems he knew were no doubt installed across the yard.
People on duty at the front and back entrances were obvious, but once he'd found himself inside it was making it past all the hoity-toity jerks that would be the real challenge. Well, something he looked forward to. If the kid couldn't break into this place then he'd have no right in calling himself a thief. After all, something with a bit of a challenge might just be fun after all.
