wicked eyes and wicked hearts
He was late. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Alistair wasn't good with timing himself, but it was odd. Gabriel was never late. Well, not when it mattered anyway. Maybe something had happened? Maybe...maybe the bus was running late? Did Gab eve take the bus?
Serious questions. But now he was rambling.
The brunette sighed, looking through his glasses to stare at the brown coffee liquid below him. The surface rippled slightly, as people came and went and cars and trucks moved about outside. It was starting to get a bit cold out, but nothing too out of the ordinary for this time of the year. Why the coffee place then? Why coffee when it wasn't even that cold out? He truly didn't know. It just seemed...homey.
There he was, rambling again. But he couldn't help it! When he was nervous, Alistair rambled. He didn't make sense. He couldn't...concentrate. That's how he felt now. Awkward. Nervous. Scared. Well, not really scared. He was just worried that it was now past the time he'd texted Gab to meet him and now he wasn't there. Maybe they hadn't made up like Alistair had thought?
sky blue hued eyes flickered nervously to the side as he lifted a hand to tuck a wayward strand of hair behind his ear. time ticked by steadily as he waited anxiously for the light to change, and with each passing moment, the bubble of self-loathing and despair expanded within his chest. the blunette felt hollow and disconnected from the world. he existed outside of reality; however, the blame remained entirely in his own hands. metaphorical blood stained the pale palms and fingers as he apparently deemed his closest friend as inconsequential and not worth his time. doubt seeped into his thoughts while his hand fluttered back to his side, fingers curving around the hem of his coat and clutching the thin fabric with unnecessary strength. the color vanished from his knuckles due to the pressure, which did not relent until the crowd began to move.
with a sea of bodies surrounding him, gabriel shuffled forward, propelled by the movement of the crowd. his feet resembled unruly pieces of lead. he perceived the appendages as being difficult to move, and with the almost comforting presence of the horde of people, the glaceon managed to maintain his balance. trepidation settled upon him as he finally reached the end of the crosswalk. with an awkward half-step up, he landed on the opposite side of the street without incident; however, his emotions reached a peak, mingling together and forming an overwhelming tsunami within his heart. defeat caused his shoulders to slump while the fair haired youth dragged himself toward his destination. hesitation lingered in his movements though he refused to allow his friend to believe in a lie… a misunderstanding.
strands of pale blue hair fluttered into his eyes as he bowed his head. his forward movements ceased as he hovered next to the coffee shop’s entrance. fear clouded his mind as he stared at the innocent door knob, which gleamed merrily due to the sunlight. subconsciously, gabriel recognized that alistair would forgive his tardiness; however, his conscious mind lacked the mental fortitude to disregard the niggling sensation of doubt. their relationship teetered on the edge of a knife. one mistake could spell the ruin of a childhood friendship, and the eldest white loathed the idea of losing the chansey’s trust and companionship. with a deep inhalation of oxygen, he forced his wooden limbs to move, reaching out toward the door knob and forcing his feet to pry themselves off of the concrete.
warmth greeted him as he entered the cozy building, and without the walls of the store hindering his view, his icy blue tinted eyes sought out the familiar figure of his brunette friend. a slight smile settled upon his mien once he spotted the other. the short walk from the door to his companion’s chosen seat, however, did not grant gabriel ample time to reorganize and understand the toxic whirlwind of emotions that assaulted him. so he hovered beside the free seat across from the green eyed professor, staring at the floor and trying to ignore the heat that radiated from his cheeks. sorry, he began in a mere whisper. i lost track of time. i… i… didn’t mean to arrive late. blue eyes shifted to search his companion’s green colored eyes, hoping to find forgiveness and understanding in the familiar gaze.

wicked eyes and wicked hearts
He...wasn't here. He wasn't coming. Alistair's emerald green eyes flickered from the window to the door and back again, only to then fall to the coffee cup before him on the table. The clock on his wrist watch said 3:00...an hour after the brunette had asked Gabriel to meet him at the quaint little coffee shop in the downtown area. Part of him wondered if maybe - just maybe - the blue-haired student had simply forgotten the time or had gotten too lost in a book to remember? Or he was running late?
But he wasn't ever this late. Alistair's heart sank into the pit of his stomach as he once again checked the window for any sign of his friend. Even though blue was a unique hair color, he still couldn't make it out in the sea of people that came and went before him. What had happened between them to make life so difficult for them to meet up? Alistair almost cracked a smile then, fondly thinking back to a time where things were much simpler between the two.
Gabriel had been his first - and only - friend for most of his young lifetime. They'd grown up together, with the glaceon taking him in simply because he had nowhere else to go than back to a mother who hated him for simply existing. Not that he'd ever strayed too far from his mother at the time; but he was young and didn't know any better. Regardless, Gabe had taken him when no one else wanted anything to do with the mute boy with the bruised eyes and bloody knuckles, and the rest was history. They'd taken care of one another...spoken for each other when they couldn't do it for themselves. Gabriel was almost like Alistair's other half--
Or, well, that used to be the case.
Up until it was becoming apparent that Alistair had a knack for his special healing abilities. That, coupled with his intelligence, allowed him to speed through high school, leaving Gabriel behind a year or two. He graduated high school and moved on to college simply because he'd been given a full ride; otherwise he wouldn't have gone in the first place. And it seemed that neither boy had time to do anything, much less spend time with one another...And that's how they became so separated. Even with Alistair's graduation and speedy appointment to the healing department's head, there still hadn't been much time for him to even seek out his blue-haired brother.
So of course it had been Gabe himself who sought Alistair out after so many years of silence. It filled his heart with both joy and sadness; joy that he could reconnect, but sadness that he hadn't been the one to instigate such a reunion. Alistair had then offered to take the other male out for coffee a week later to continue to catch up--
The ring of the bell on the door jolted Alistair from his reprieve. His emerald eyes shot up, looking into the blue hues of his best friend who searched for some sign of forgiveness for his tardiness. The brunette could only stare for a moment, surprised that Gabriel had even decided to show up - much less apologize for being so late - and he couldn't help but crack a stupid grin while nodding happily at the seat across from him.
"I'm glad you came..." He trailed off, unsure of what to say next. But he truly was happy that the male had decided to show up after all.

ALL I HAVE IS ONE LAST CHANGE
relief flooded gabriel’s senses as the familiar and cherished smile appeared on his companion’s visage. strength evaporated from his limbs as he carefully reached out toward the remaining chair, wincing as the legs scraped against the floor; however, he hesitated to claim the chair. doubt lingered in the back of his mind with a vicious, insidious voice that constantly questioned the situation and alistair’s motives. the glaceon understood that the chansey wanted to reconnect, and he desired to reach the same level of intimacy that they once shared. his mind refused to believe in the apparent truth, constantly reviving his feelings of self-loathing and uncertainty. for a brief moment, the fair haired youth wished to return to the pleasant days of their childhood.
with the soft shuffling of his shoes against the floor, the blunette claimed the seat, collapsing upon the uncomfortable inanimate object without any traces of innate grace. pale hands rested on his lap, fingers digging into his knees, while his shoulders remained hunched together. gabriel lacked the strength to lift his head, ashamed of himself and fearing alistair’s rejection. silence reigned despite the brunette’s feeble attempt to spark a conversation. his tongue felt heavy due to the unsaid words; however, his jaw seemed locked into place. his mouth refused to move despite his mounting apprehension. their relationship suffered due to lack of time, and regardless of their intentions, an awkward tension hovered between them as neither could muster the courage to break the metaphorical ice.
the instinct to flee caused his limbs to tense with his feet planted firmly on the ground and fingers attempting to burrow into his skin and break bones. the palpitations of his heart echoed in his ears as he carefully shifted his gaze away from the table, which he had been staring at for several endless minutes; however, gabriel merely glanced at alistair for a brief moment and then shifted his gaze to the window. a faint dusting of pink graced his cheeks while his teeth caught his lower lip and began nibbling on the innocent body part. even in his recent nightmares, he never expected the current situation, believing that they could reconnect without significant difficulty. pale lips curved into a self-deprecating smile. naivety did not suit him; he should have realized.
an exhalation of breath caused the pitiful smile to disappear from his mien, and with carefully controlled movements, gabriel returned his attention to the brown haired professor, connecting blue with green for the third time. trepidation engulfed him though he refused to falter. he needed to overcome the irrational sensation of terror, and he could only accomplish his task by taking the first step toward reconnection. his mouth opened; however, words refused to follow the movement. with a rueful smile gracing his features, he tried again, opening and closing his mouth twice more before managing to produce a sound. i’m sorry, the ice type murmured. he was not apologizing for being late. no, he was apologizing for everything. and… uh… i… i hadn’t meant to be late. i… i got lost in studying for an exam, and before i realized it… the clock had already struck two-thirty. a helpless shrug followed his statement, but the jerky movement did not suit the usual nonchalance associated with spending time with the normal type.

wicked eyes and wicked hearts
The goofy grin on Alistair's face soon dropped at the state Gabriel was in. Had he been hurt in some way? The way his eyes were downcast and his lips curled into a frown-- it seemed like he didn't truly want to be there. Sure, things were going to be awkward between the two at first, but did he really feel so terrible that he just wanted to run away and never look back at the coffee shop he was currently in? Alistair's heart dropped like a stone in water. He didn't know what to do.
So he stayed quiet, emerald eyes watching the glaceon's every move. First, his muscles tensed as he stood awkwardly by the table. Then, after seeing his own smile, the ice-type almost seemed to collapse into the chair before him. Alistair continued to watch, even as Gabe's head leaned in so close to the table itself he thought the other would simply melt into it. Is that how he felt? Once again, Alistair's heart dropped. Any lower and he'd be shitting it out at home.
But eventually the blunette spoke, and inwardly the chansey let out a sigh of relief. Even though his words seemed unsteady, it felt better to have some sort of conversation peak between the two. At first, Alistair assumed the apology was just for being late. But the depth at which it was said...no, that was more than just 'I'm sorry for being late'. It was an apology for everything. Those two words spoken so softly meant the world to Alistair, and he could only smile back once more at his friend as he continued on about being late.
"It's alright. Really." He replied in a soft voice, eyes closing as he once again smiled to Gabriel. His eyes opened and slowly he reached across the table to pat the male's arm reassuringly. "I...I know things have been...hard...between us. And it's my fault. I...I should have tried harder..." His emerald eyes were downcast then, the smile faded from his lips as regret washed over him like a wave. "If I hadn't left so soon...none of this would have happened. I should have stayed back with you..."
The hand on Gabriel's arm tightened for a moment as Alistair got caught up in memories. But reality came back to him as the door of the coffee shop opened and he let out a deep sigh. "Anyway...I'm the one who is deeply sorry for this...rift. I'm going to do whatever it takes to mend our friendship. And...And I love you like a brother, okay? You're...really, the only family I've got..." The male blushed then, looking down at the table as he once again trailed off.

ALL I HAVE IS ONE LAST CHANGE
with his confession vocalized, gabriel found himself at the brunette’s mercy as the chansey held the power to destroy the remaining tendrils of hope or to nurture them, allowing them to flourish in his heart. their recent lack of understanding caused daggers to rain down upon his heart, stabbing mercilessly into the pitiful organ and leaving him with countless doubts; however, the ice type wanted to believe in his friend. in the past, they communicated solely through body language and facial expressions. no words escaped them as they were inconsequential to understanding one another. words acted as tools for the feeble minded, yet in the present, they struggled to connect due to their unexpected separation.
as a child, the glaceon never dreamed of losing contact with his friend. no, he prayed constantly that he would always have alistair in his life; the blunette had been adamant about contacting and spending time with the normal type. he would count the hours between their conversations, anxiously awaiting for the moment that they could meet again. gabriel cannot remember when he ceased waiting nervously for signs of the sable haired professor. he cannot fathom the reason behind his sudden disregard though he recalled wasting more and more time on comforting his relatives. as the eldest, he felt inclined to assist them regardless of the circumstances or his own schedule. slowly, his free time dwindled until he struggled to recall his last conversation with his closest friend, and with his realization, the world seemed to collapse around him, fading away from underneath his feet and leaving him to fall endlessly through darkness.
however, instead of the verbal rebuke that he expected, alistair smiled and shredded the remaining distance between them by reaching out. familiar fingers wrapped around his arm, and with the physical contact, relief flooded through the fair haired male. his pale lips quirked into a sheepish smile while he listened intently to the brunette’s response, burning the words into his memory and vowing to continue holding onto the hand that the other offered. lips parted as words surged to his mind, rebuttals hovering on the tip of his tongue, yet alistair refused to allow him the opportunity to interrupt. with his brows furrowing in a mixture of concern and dismay, gabriel closed his mouth and waited for the end of the brown haired male’s concession.
sorrow plagued his heart as he lifted his free hand to rest over his friend’s hand, fingers curling around the appendage in a silent display of understanding. he understood alistair’s feelings and wanted to show his support. the younger man did not blame his companion for being gifted and accepting the opportunity that appeared before him; no, gabriel blamed himself for not seeking out the brunette. his grip on alistair’s hand tightened slightly as the other turned his attention to the table. with a deep breath, he launched into his own speech, having realized the gravity of their misunderstanding with each word that escaped his friend’s mouth. no, the glaceon began. it’s not your fault. if you had tried to stay behind, i would’ve been upset. you were presented an opportunity, and i cannot begrudge you for that.
with his head tipped to the side, pastel colored bangs cast shadows over his eyes, hiding the jewel toned eyes from sight. and a friendship takes two people. i don’t want to give up on our friendship, so… we should both try our best. pale lids descended over his eyes as he fought to maintain his composure. emotions welled up inside him, threatening to spill over with the tears that gathered in his eyes. and… i love you too. his smile gained a flimsy edge as his grip tightened further upon his friend’s hand, for he utilized the sensation of their skin touching to anchor himself in reality. he required reassurance that alistair was with him and that he was not trapped in another vivid dream. his heart would shatter if their current conversation turned out to be a mere fabrication of his mind.

wicked eyes and wicked hearts
They were both being so...awkward. The strange silence that hung between the two was almost too much for Alistair to bear. One could cut the tension with a knife...but it wasn't as much tension as it was...apprehension? Were they both afraid that the other wouldn't agree to becoming friends once more? The brunette knew he would never let someone as precious as Gabriel slip away from him so easily, but would the blunette think of him in the same light?
His thoughts were cut short, however, when Gabriel took his hand into his own and gave him a reassuring glance that everything would be alright. He was right; friendship was a two way street and they both needed to try their best to keep their friendship alive. But they were only human. In the back of Alistair's mind he wondered if history would repeat itself; would they go through another rift like this later on down the road? Would it be in Gab's best interest to just shut their friendship down now, while they still had a chance?
But upon hearing those three simple words - those words that Alistair reciprocated in return - all he could do was look into Gabriel's ice blue eyes and grin like an idiot. This wasn't love between two people who wanted to have intercourse or to procreate. This was an all-encompassing love. This was...true love between two men who thought of one another as family, even though they were anything but. This was a love that made Alsitair's heart feel warm and fuzzy inside...and all he could do was stare into the blue orbs of his companion in the moment.
After a few moments, however, Alistair noticed how he was staring and blushed, only to look away and remove his hand from Gabriel's own. "S-sorry! I...uhh...D-Do you want some...uhh coffee? Or a hot chocolate? I'm paying so don't even try." Another smile crossed the brunette's face as he moved to stand, grabbing his own cold cup of liquid in the process. "I need a refill. A Chai tea sounds nice for the occasion..."
